These stack traces kind of suck for the reasons mentioned on the
CppTrace page here (no symbols for inline functions is a major one):

I would consider using CppTrace if it were packaged, but to be honest, I
think that the more reasonable option is actually to move entirely to
out-of-process crash handling and symbolization.
The reason for this is that if you want to generate anything of
substance on SIGSEGV or really any deadly signal, you are stuck in
async-signal-safe land, which is not a place to be trying to run a
symbolizer. LLVM does it anyway, probably carefully, and chromium *can*
do it on debug builds but in general uses crashpad:

However, some stack traces are better than *no* stack traces when we get
mystery exceptions falling out the bottom of the program. I've also
promoted the path for "mystery exceptions falling out the bottom of the
program" to hard crash and generate a core dump because although there's
been some months since the last one of these, these are nonetheless
always *atrociously* diagnosed.
We can't improve the crash handling further until either we use Crashpad
(which involves more C++ deps, no thanks) or we put in the ostensibly
work in progress Rust minidump infrastructure, in which case we need to
finish full support for Rust in libutil first.

This didn't really feel so worth it afterwards, but I did untangle a
bunch of stuff that should not have been tangled.
The general gist of this change is that variant bullshit was causing a
bunch of compile time, and it seems like the only way to deal with
variant induced compile time is to keep variant types out of headers.
Explicit template instantiation seems to do nothing for them.
I also seem to have gotten some back-end time improvement from
explicitly instantiating regex, but I don't know why. There is no
corresponding front-end time improvement from it: regex is still at the
top of the sinners list.

As I complained in
https://github.com/NixOS/nix/pull/6784#issuecomment-1421777030 (a
comment on the wrong PR, sorry again!), #6693 introduced a second
completions mechanism to fix a bug. Having two completion mechanisms
isn't so nice.
As @thufschmitt also pointed out, it was a bummer to go from `FlakeRef`
to `std::string` when collecting flake refs. Now it is `FlakeRefs`
again.
The underlying issue that sought to work around was that completion of
arguments not at the end can still benefit from the information from
latter arguments.
To fix this better, we rip out that change and simply defer all
completion processing until after all the (regular, already-complete)
arguments have been passed.
In addition, I noticed the original completion logic used some global
variables. I do not like global variables, because even if they save
lines of code, they also obfuscate the architecture of the code.
I got rid of them moved them to a new `RootArgs` class, which now has
`parseCmdline` instead of `Args`. The idea is that we have many argument
parsers from subcommands and what-not, but only one root args that owns
the other per actual parsing invocation. The state that was global is
now part of the root args instead.
This did, admittedly, add a bunch of new code. And I do feel bad about
that. So I went and added a lot of API docs to try to at least make the
current state of things clear to the next person.

This is needed for RFC 134 (tracking issue #7868). It was very hard to
modularize `Installable` parsing when there were two completion
arguments. I wouldn't go as far as to say it is *easy* now, but at least
it is less hard (and the completions test finally passed).

* Finish converting existing comments for internal API docs
99% of this was just reformatting existing comments. Only two exceptions:
- Expanded upon `BuildResult::status` compat note
- Split up file-level `symbol-table.hh` doc comments to get
per-definition docs
Also fixed a few whitespace goofs, turning leading tabs to spaces and
removing trailing spaces.
Picking up from #8133
* Fix two things from comments
* Use triple-backtick not indent for `dumpPath`
* Convert GNU-style `\`..'` quotes to markdown style in API docs
This will render correctly.

Before this change, stdout was closed after the pager exits. This is
fine for non-interactive commands where we want to exit right after
the pager exits anyways, but for interactive things (e.g. nix repl)
this breaks the output after we quit the pager.
Keep the initial stdout fd as part of RunPager, and restore it in
RunPager::~RunPager using dup2.

This avoids an ambiguity where the `StorePathWithOutputs { drvPath, {}
}` could mean "build `brvPath`" or "substitute `drvPath`" depending on
context.
It also brings the internals closer in line to the new CLI, by
generalizing the `Buildable` type is used there and makes that
distinction already.
In doing so, relegate `StorePathWithOutputs` to being a type just for
backwards compatibility (CLI and RPC).

Most functions now take a StorePath argument rather than a Path (which
is just an alias for std::string). The StorePath constructor ensures
that the path is syntactically correct (i.e. it looks like
<store-dir>/<base32-hash>-<name>). Similarly, functions like
buildPaths() now take a StorePathWithOutputs, rather than abusing Path
by adding a '!<outputs>' suffix.
Note that the StorePath type is implemented in Rust. This involves
some hackery to allow Rust values to be used directly in C++, via a
helper type whose destructor calls the Rust type's drop()
function. The main issue is the dynamic nature of C++ move semantics:
after we have moved a Rust value, we should not call the drop function
on the original value. So when we move a value, we set the original
value to bitwise zero, and the destructor only calls drop() if the
value is not bitwise zero. This should be sufficient for most types.
Also lots of minor cleanups to the C++ API to make it more modern
(e.g. using std::optional and std::string_view in some places).

Also, introduce a non-nullable smart pointer, ref<T>, which is just a
wrapper around std::shared_ptr ensuring that the pointer is never
null. (For reference-counted values, this is better than passing a
"T&", because the latter doesn't maintain the refcount. Usually, the
caller will have a shared_ptr keeping the value alive, but that's not
always the case, e.g., when passing a reference to a std::thread via
std::bind.)

This flag causes paths that do not have a known substitute to be
quietly ignored. This is mostly useful for Charon, allowing it to
speed up deployment by letting a machine use substitutes for all
substitutable paths, instead of uploading them. The latter is
frequently faster, e.g. if the target machine has a fast Internet
connection while the source machine is on a slow ADSL line.

AFAIK nobody uses this, setuid binaries are evil, and there is no good
reason why people can't just run the daemon.

Output names are now appended to resulting GC symlinks, e.g. by
nix-build. For backwards compatibility, if the output is named "out",
nothing is appended. E.g. doing "nix-build -A foo" on a derivation
that produces outputs "out", "bin" and "dev" will produce symlinks
"./result", "./result-bin" and "./result-dev", respectively.
