2024-08-28tree-wide: shuffle headers around for about 30s compile timeJade Lovelace
This didn't really feel so worth it afterwards, but I did untangle a bunch of stuff that should not have been tangled. The general gist of this change is that variant bullshit was causing a bunch of compile time, and it seems like the only way to deal with variant induced compile time is to keep variant types out of headers. Explicit template instantiation seems to do nothing for them. I also seem to have gotten some back-end time improvement from explicitly instantiating regex, but I don't know why. There is no corresponding front-end time improvement from it: regex is still at the top of the sinners list. **** Templates that took longest to instantiate: 15231 ms: std::basic_regex<char>::_M_compile (28 times, avg 543 ms) 15066 ms: std::__detail::_Compiler<std::regex_traits<char>>::_Compiler (28 times, avg 538 ms) 12571 ms: std::__detail::_Compiler<std::regex_traits<char>>::_M_disjunction (28 times, avg 448 ms) 12454 ms: std::__detail::_Compiler<std::regex_traits<char>>::_M_alternative (28 times, avg 444 ms) 12225 ms: std::__detail::_Compiler<std::regex_traits<char>>::_M_term (28 times, avg 436 ms) 11363 ms: nlohmann::basic_json<>::parse<const char *> (21 times, avg 541 ms) 10628 ms: nlohmann::basic_json<>::basic_json (109 times, avg 97 ms) 10134 ms: std::__detail::_Compiler<std::regex_traits<char>>::_M_atom (28 times, avg 361 ms) Back-end time before messing with the regex: **** Function sets that took longest to compile / optimize: 8076 ms: void boost::io::detail::put<$>(boost::io::detail::put_holder<$> cons... 2024-08-08tree-wide: fix a pile of lintsJade Lovelace
This: - Converts a bunch of C style casts into C++ casts. - Removes some very silly pointer subtraction code (which is no more or less busted on i686 than it began) - Fixes some "technically UB" that never had to be UB in the first place. - Makes finally follow the noexcept status of the inner function. Maybe in the future we should ban the function from not being noexcept, but that is not today. - Makes various locally-used exceptions inherit from std::exception. 2024-07-21libstore/binary-cache-store: use correct buffer size for NAR decompressionAlois Wohlschlager
Due to a leftover from a previous version where the buffer was allocated on the stack, the change introduced in commit 4ec87742a196d8ed8f41b41ef039706ce791448d accidentally passes the size of a pointer as the size of the buffer to the decompressor. Since the former is much smaller (usually 8 bytes instead of 64 kilobytes), this is safe, but leads to considerable overhead; most notably, due to excessive progress reports, which happen for each chunk. Pass the proper buffer size instead. Change-Id: If4bf472d33e21587acb5235a2d99e3cb10914633

2024-06-19libutil: return a source from readFileeldritch horrors
don't consume a sink, return a source instead. the only reason to not do this is a very slight reduction in dynamic allocations, but since we are going to *at least* do disk io that will not be a lot of overhead anyway Change-Id: Iae2f879ec64c3c3ac1d5310eeb6a85e696d4614a

2024-06-16Harmonise the Store::queryPathInfoUncached interfacejulia
This: - Consistently returns `nullptr` for a non-existent store path, instead of a mix of `nullptr` and throwing exceptions. - If a store returns "bad" store paths in response to a request (e.g. incorrect hash or name), don't cache this result. This removes some duplication of code at the cache-access layer of queryPathInfo() checking this, and allows us to provide more specific errors. Part of #270. 2024-05-29Remove 100s of CPU time (10%) from build times (1465s -> 1302s)Jade Lovelace
I saw that boost/lexical_cast was costing about 100s in CPU time on our compiles. We can fix this trivially by doing explicit template instantiation in exactly one place and eliminating all other includes of it, which is a code improvement anyway by hiding the boost. it's no longer used. it really shouldn't have existed this long since it was just a mashup of both std::promise and std::packaged_task in a shape that makes composition unnecessarily difficult. all but a single case of Callback pattern calls were fully synchronous anyway, and even this sole outlier was by far not important enough to justify the extra complexity. 2023-07-07Simplify `ContentAddress`John Ericson
Whereas `ContentAddressWithReferences` is a sum type complex because different varieties support different notions of reference, and `ContentAddressMethod` is a nested enum to support that, `ContentAddress` can be a simple pair of a method and hash. `ContentAddress` does not need to be a sum type on the outside because the choice of method doesn't effect what type of hashes we can use. With the switch to C++20, the rules became more strict, and we can no longer initialize base classes. Make them comments instead. (BTW https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2021/p2287r1.html this offers some new syntax for this use-case. Hopefully this will be adopted and we can eventually use it.)

2023-01-23Don't add `StorePathDescriptor` for nowJohn Ericson
We don't need it yet, we can add it back later.
2023-01-14Make `ValidPathInfo` have plain `StorePathSet` references like beforeJohn Ericson
This change can wait for another PR.

2022-12-08Fix `nix log` with CA derivationsregnat
Fix #6209 When trying to run `nix log <installable>`, try first to resolve the derivation pointed to by `<installable>` as it is the resolved one that holds the build log. This has a couple of shortcomings: 1. It’s expensive as it requires re-reading the derivation 2. It’s brittle because if the derivation doesn’t exist anymore or can’t be resolved (which is the case if any one of its build inputs is missing), then we can’t access the log anymore However, I don’t think we can do better (at least not right now). The alternatives I see are: 1. Copy the build log for the un-resolved derivation. But that means a lot of duplication 2. Store the results of the resolving in the db. Which might be the best long-term solution, but leads to a whole new class of potential issues.

These were needed back in the pre-C++11 era because we didn't have move semantics. But now we do.
