2024-10-15treewide: make more settings conditionally availableAlois Wohlschlager
Some settings only make sense on particular platforms, or only when a certain experimental feature is enabled. Several of those were already conditionally available. Do the same for a bunch more instead of silently ignoring them. Exceptionally, the use-case-hack setting is not made conditional because it is included in the test suite. 2024-10-01Split ignoreException to avoid suppressing CTRL-CRobert Hensing
This splits `ignoreException` into `ignoreExceptionExceptInterrupt` (which ignores all exceptions except `Interrupt`, which indicates a SIGINT/CTRL-C) and `ignoreExceptionInDestructor` (which ignores all exceptions, so that destructors do not throw exceptions). This prevents many cases where Nix ignores CTRL-C entirely. See: https://github.com/NixOS/nix/issues/7245 Upstream-PR: https://github.com/NixOS/nix/pull/11618 Change-Id: Ie7d2467eedbe840d1b9fa2e88a4e88e4ab26a87b
2024-07-01tree-wide: unify progress bar inactive and paused statesAlois Wohlschlager
Previously, the progress bar had two subtly different states in which the bar would not actually render, both with their own shortcomings: inactive (which was irreversible) and paused (reversible, but swallowing logs). Furthermore, there was no way of resetting the statistics, so a very bad solution was implemented (243c0f18dae2a08ea0e46f7ff33277c63f7506d7) that would create a new logger for each line of the repl, leaking the previous one and discarding the value of printBuildLogs. Finally, if stderr was not attached to a TTY, the update thread was started even though the logger was not active, violating the invariant required by the destructor (which is not observed because the logger is leaked). In this commit, the two aforementioned states are unified into a single one, which can be exited again, correctly upholds the invariant that the update thread is only running while the progress bar is active, and does not swallow logs. The latter change in behavior is not expected to be a problems in the rare cases where the paused state was used before, since other loggers (like the simple one) don't exhibit it anyway. The startProgressBar/stopProgressBar API is removed due to being a footgun, and a new method for properly resetting the progress is added. 2024-05-29Remove 100s of CPU time (10%) from build times (1465s -> 1302s)Jade Lovelace
I saw that boost/lexical_cast was costing about 100s in CPU time on our compiles. We can fix this trivially by doing explicit template instantiation in exactly one place and eliminating all other includes of it, which is a code improvement anyway by hiding the boost. 2023-08-18Fixing #7479John Ericson
Types converted: - `NixStringContextElem` - `OutputsSpec` - `ExtendedOutputsSpec` - `DerivationOutput` - `DerivationType` Existing ones mostly conforming the pattern cleaned up: - `ContentAddressMethod` - `ContentAddressWithReferences` The `DerivationGoal::derivationType` field had a bogus initialization, now caught, so I made it `std::optional`. I think #8829 can make it non-optional again because it will ensure we always have the derivation when we construct a `DerivationGoal`. See that issue (#7479) for details on the general goal. `git grep 'Raw::Raw'` indicates the two types I didn't yet convert `DerivedPath` and `BuiltPath` (and their `Single` variants) . This is because @roberth and I (can't find issue right now...) plan on reworking them somewhat, so I didn't want to churn them more just yet. Co-authored-by: Eelco Dolstra <edolstra@gmail.com>
2023-08-10Make the Derived Path family of types inductive for dynamic derivationsJohn Ericson
We want to be able to write down `foo.drv^bar.drv^baz`: `foo.drv^bar.drv` is the dynamic derivation (since it is itself a derivation output, `bar.drv` from `foo.drv`). To that end, we create `Single{Derivation,BuiltPath}` types, that are very similar except instead of having multiple outputs (in a set or map), they have a single one. This is for everything to the left of the rightmost `^`. `NixStringContextElem` has an analogous change, and now can reuse `SingleDerivedPath` at the top level. In fact, if we ever get rid of `DrvDeep`, `NixStringContextElem` could be replaced with `SingleDerivedPath` entirely! Important note: some JSON formats have changed. We already can *produce* dynamic derivations, but we can't refer to them directly. Today, we can merely express building or example at the top imperatively over time by building `foo.drv^bar.drv`, and then with a second nix invocation doing `<result-from-first>^baz`, but this is not declarative. The ethos of Nix of being able to write down the full plan everything you want to do, and then execute than plan with a single command, and for that we need the new inductive form of these types. 2023-05-10Fix `nix print-dev-env` & `nix develop` with drv pathsJohn Ericson
Fixes #8309 This regression was because both `CmdDevelop` and `CmdPrintDevEnv` were switched to be `InstallableValueCommand` subclasses, but actually neither should have been. The `nixpkgsFlakeRef` method should indeed not be on the base installable class, because "flake refs" and "nixpkgs" are not installable-wide notions, but that doesn't mean these commands should only accept installable values.

Stratify `ExtraPathInfo` along `Installable` hierarchy
2023-03-24Stratify `ExtraPathInfo` along `Installable` hierarchyJohn Ericson
Instead of having a bunch of optional fields, have a few subclasses which can have mandatory fields. Additionally, the new `getExtraPathInfo`, and `nixpkgsFlakeRef`, are moved to `InstallableValue`. I did these things because https://github.com/NixOS/rfcs/pull/134 ; with these things moved to `InstallableValue`, the base `Installable` no longer depends on libexpr! This is a major step towards that. Also, add a bunch of doc comments for sake of the internal API docs.
2023-03-20Move enabled experimental feature to libutil structJohn Ericson
This is needed in subsequent commits to allow the settings and CLI args infrastructure itself to read this setting.
2023-03-15Make command infra less stateful and more regularJohn Ericson
Already, we had classes like `BuiltPathsCommand` and `StorePathsCommand` which provided alternative `run` virtual functions providing the implementation with more arguments. This was a very nice and easy way to make writing command; just fill in the virtual functions and it is fairly clear what to do. However, exception to this pattern were `Installable{,s}Command`. These two classes instead just had a field where the installables would be stored, and various side-effecting `prepare` and `load` machinery too fill them in. Command would wish out those fields. This isn't so clear to use. What this commit does is make those command classes like the others, with richer `run` functions. Not only does this restore the pattern making commands easier to write, it has a number of other benefits: - `prepare` and `load` are gone entirely! One command just hands just hands off to the next. - `useDefaultInstallables` because `defaultInstallables`. This takes over `prepare` for the one case that needs it, and provides enough flexiblity to handle `nix repl`'s idiosyncratic migration. - We can use `ref` instead of `std::shared_ptr`. The former must be initialized (so it is like Rust's `Box` rather than `Option<Box>`, This expresses the invariant that the installable are in fact initialized much better. This is possible because since we just have local variables not fields, we can stop worrying about the not-yet-initialized case. - Fewer lines of code! (Finally I have a large refactor that makes the number go down not up...) - `nix repl` is now implemented in a clearer way. The last item deserves further mention. `nix repl` is not like the other installable commands because instead working from once-loaded installables, it needs to be able to load them again and again. To properly support this, we make a new superclass `RawInstallablesCommand`. This class has the argument parsing and completion logic, but does *not* hand off parsed installables but instead just the raw string arguments. This is exactly what `nix repl` needs, and allows us to instead of having the logic awkwardly split between `prepare`, `useDefaultInstallables,` and `load`, have everything right next to each other. I think this will enable future simplifications of that argument defaulting logic, but I am saving those for a future PR --- best to keep code motion and more complicated boolean expression rewriting separate steps. The "diagnostic ignored `-Woverloaded-virtual`" pragma helps because C++ doesn't like our many `run` methods. In our case, we don't mind the shadowing it all --- it is *intentional* that the derived class only provides a `run` method, and doesn't call any of the overridden `run` methods. Helps with https://github.com/NixOS/rfcs/pull/134

2022-03-29Simplify the handling of the hash moduloThéophane Hufschmitt
Rather than having four different but very similar types of hashes, make only one, with a tag indicating whether it corresponds to a regular of deferred derivation. This implies a slight logical change: The original Nix+multiple-outputs model assumed only one hash-modulo per derivation. Adding multiple-outputs CA derivations changed this as these have one hash-modulo per output. This change is now treating each derivation as having one hash modulo per output. This obviously means that we internally loose the guaranty that all the outputs of input-addressed derivations have the same hash modulo. But it turns out that it doesn’t matter because there’s nothing in the code taking advantage of that fact (and it probably shouldn’t anyways). The upside is that it is now much easier to work with these hashes, and we can get rid of a lot of useless `std::visit{ overloaded`. Co-authored-by: John Ericson <John.Ericson@Obsidian.Systems>

2022-03-17Clean up `DerivationOutput`, and headersJohn Ericson
1. `DerivationOutput` now as the `std::variant` as a base class. And the variants are given hierarchical names under `DerivationOutput`. In 8e0d0689be797f9e42f9b43b06f50c1af7f20b4a @matthewbauer and I didn't know a better idiom, and so we made it a field. But this sort of "newtype" is anoying for literals downstream. Since then we leaned the base class, inherit the constructors trick, e.g. used in `DerivedPath`. Switching to use that makes this more ergonomic, and consistent. 2. `store-api.hh` and `derivations.hh` are now independent. In bcde5456cc3295061a0726881c3e441444dd6680 I swapped the dependency, but I now know it is better to just keep on using incomplete types as much as possible for faster compilation and good separation of concerns.
2022-03-11Reduce variants for derivation hash moduloJohn Ericson
This changes was taken from dynamic derivation (#4628). It` somewhat undoes the refactors I first did for floating CA derivations, as the benefit of hindsight + requirements of dynamic derivations made me reconsider some things. They aren't to consequential, but I figured they might be good to land first, before the more profound changes @thufschmitt has in the works.

2021-10-26Make experimental-features a proper typeregnat
Rather than having them plain strings scattered through the whole codebase, create an enum containing all the known experimental features. This means that - Nix can now `warn` when an unkwown experimental feature is passed (making it much nicer to spot typos and spot deprecated features) - It’s now easy to remove a feature altogether (once the feature isn’t experimental anymore or is dropped) by just removing the field for the enum and letting the compiler point us to all the now invalid usages of it.

2021-08-19nix develop --phase: chdir to flake directoryMatthew Kenigsberg

Fixes #5024.
2021-07-22buildPaths(): Add an evalStore argumentEelco Dolstra
With this, we don't have to copy the entire .drv closure to the destination store ahead of time (or at all). Instead, buildPaths() reads .drv files from the eval store and copies inputSrcs to the destination store if it needs to build a derivation. Issue #5025.
2021-07-22Use eval-store in more placesEelco Dolstra
In particular, this now works: $ nix path-info --eval-store auto --store https://cache.nixos.org nixpkgs#hello Previously this would fail as it would try to upload the hello .drv to cache.nixos.org. Now the .drv is instantiated in the local store, and then we check for the existence of the outputs in cache.nixos.org.
